A flippin' awesome idea ...

I'm so effing tired of people who flippin' cuss all the dang time! Crikey, it makes me effing cringe!

I spent time with 'a different crowd' a while ago and it made me realize how much I enjoy my 'regular' crowd. Not that the connections and activities weren't great, but *the way* people choose and use their words makes a huge difference. You say, "well, duh!" but sometimes it takes a blatant illustration to send that message straight home. I seriously had to prepare myself for conversations so that I wouldn't visibly cringe and would be able to filter out the context.
'No Cussing' Founder: Mind Your Dang Language
"The reason it bothered me the most is 'cause it was something they were using every other word, kinda like the word 'the.' They kept using it and using it."
When I cuss, I like to think it's something that *adds* to the message, not just pepper it in like a pause in speech, as an 'umm' or 'like' would be. If you removed the vulgar words, you'd get the same message, maybe just not in bold, capital letters.

I don't think this makes me elitist, or super-mature or better than anyone else. When I worked in a factory for a summer during university, I mimicked the surrounding language and speaking style to fit in and communicate. Often, it would spill over into my non-work life. Considering I had to learn to not cuss when more of my friends had kids, I know it's not something that's easy to change.

In an ideal world, I'd like to keep it to 'special' occations that require that extra 'punch' for emphasis. Now, back the frick off!

On what is being called 'an excessive inauguration budget'

Yes, a lot of money was spent on this inauguration, but am I bothered by it? Do I want to criticize excess cash being put toward this occasion instead of 'fixing' up the economy? Do I want to rant on people being whiny little twits just because they're not pleased with the election results?

Uh, NO, well, yes to the last one, which is what this is...

Obama brought people together and inspired interest in politics and change both close to home and nation wide. For the first time, young twentysomethings actually cared enough to go vote in primaries and caucuses. Generally apothetic Americans banded together to make a difference in their neighborhoods, in their cities and their states.

Even if all of it is shortlived, we've seen what can happen when enough people decide to head toward common goals.

This is an inspiring man. And he happens to be a black man, or African-American, or whatever you want to call him; he's not the same old WASPs that filled the seat for the last 200+ years. THAT is something to be celebrated, in and of itself.

Tickets to the actual swearing in were freely available from your Congress person, you just needed to ask. Far fewer were available than interested parties, but it wasn't a matter of being able to pay to go see it. Jumbotrons were set up all along the Mall so people could gather and see it. How much did that cost? NOTHING for the folks who lined up and were out there.

Yes, that's tax-payer dollars paying for the Jumbotrons, but frankly, it's worth the expense to have it accessible to more people.
Obviously, the Obama team must make clear they are mindful of the fear and pain afoot across the country. No one wants to see incoming administration officials scarfing caviar and dousing one another with bottles of bubbly while leading a gaudy Conga line through the Washington Convention Center tonight (though I hear Larry Summers has some sweet moves.) But Americans, perhaps now more than ever, could use a reminder that there is still much to celebrate in and about this nation. And if that calls for paying for a few thousand extra portable toilets on the National Mall, so be it.

If there's a better way that the money could have been used, I'm more than happy to hear it. But it's going to have to be a feasible plan ... otherwise, it's just navel-gazing like most blog commenters.

becoming EXTRAORDINARY-ier

On Saturday, August 23, 2008, some women I know finished a triathlon. They were extraordinary already, but now they're even more so.

I have the physical ability to complete a sprint tri, I just lack the desire. I also lack the confidence that I'd be able to actually walk for several days afterward. Witnessing their transformations inspired me to take the first step: I dropped my bike off at Gerk's to get the once-over so I can give the whole biking thing a try. Sure, it's not 14 miles, but any miles is more than I'm currently doing and a step in the direction of figuring out if I could reasonably do a tri.

How's that for news?

I knew, deep in my heart (or gut?), that this was coming, but I couldn't quite believe it until I saw it tonight.

Chris flipped the channel from Comedy Central to MSNBC Cable, and there it was, a defining moment for our nation.

Obama Claims Nomination, Making History
NPR.org, June 4, 2008 · Sen. Barack Obama stood before a cheering crowd in a Minnesota convention hall Tuesday night, declaring himself the Democratic presidential nominee. His speech marked the end to what has been, at times, a bruising five-month-long campaign that history will remember as resulting in the first African-American to win a major party's nomination.
Obama called it "a defining moment for our nation."

Why am I using NPR.org instead of msnbc.com? A decision was made (this happened after I left the company) to start dropping leave-behind (aka pop-up) advertising when users hit story pages in some sections. I don't know if it's US News or Politics, or both. Needless to day, this decision goes against my feelings on advertising and journalism. "But CNN.com does it!" you say. Sure, but I expected that kind of thing from CNN.com, after all, they have all kinds of fuzzy math to game the third-party ratings systems. There's nothing wrong with advertising on a news site, just don't be obnoxious.

I still love the company as much as I did for the 9 years I worked there, but I expected better of you, msnbc.com.

They may not care, since I'm not a Nielsen household, but they won't see me as a frequent and repeat user in their in-house, Omniture data anymore. My first place for news is NPR.org or KUOW, my local NPR radio station, my second is now CNN.com (both have a *really* great Decision '08 thing going on).

But that's a rant for another day...
